"Seamlessly Nike", application for a role
Project scope
Self-initiated application film for Nike Brand Creative EMEA, Hilversum, 2026. Role as Storyteller, Creative Director, Producer and Editor.
Scenario
What are we, if nothing else besides made of stories? We are the cultures and the cities we grew up with. The tables of people we countlessly ran around when we were kids. Yet, the ones we remember the most are those that carry what nearly broke us. The risks we took. The rules we broke. When we chose against comfort. The moments that could have stopped us - but we refused to. Those stories give us more than we know at the time. One of those things is the wanting of more. Not because what we've built isn't enough, but because every level showed us something about ourselves we didn't know, and a higher level we didn't know existed from below. The truth about these journeys is that we never walk them alone. We were pushed. We were believed in. We've all had someone who refused to let us settle - because they saw our potential before we did. And that's what Nike does - how its teams are built. In 2026, Nike (Hilversum, NL) opened a role in Brand Creative - the heart of its storytelling, made by people who push through. Nike's ethos and my identity have always been seamlessly one. This role was a chance to tell them that. In the only shape that made sense: a story.
Approach
Work can be shown, but it never truly shows who's behind it. Most applications are written to be processed - scanned, filtered, forwarded - and we often forget who'll be reading them on the other side. The bar was simple: land emotionally, and deliver a story that's worth their time and mine. A memory that would survive long after the screen went dark. Nike's mission runs on two words: inspiration and innovation. The film aimed to answer both - one in the message, the other in the form itself. The words came from Nike. Bold. Fearless. Craft. Inspiration. Written for a role, but already true of me. Four words crossed out - dull, comfort, rules, stoppers - defaults that I refuse. The film had to carry leadership, not describe it. The camera sits low and looks up, the way Nike frames the people it believes in. The type is heavy and uppercase, close enough to keep their voice. Underneath it, the right track: Run Boy Boy, one that keeps you moving forward. The same thing Nike has been doing for fifty years. The film starts close and opens out. Facts at the face, because they're mine. Down to the hands and the feet - not for the shot, but for what's in it. And finally wide, where the story stops being only mine. Inspired by others - the giants - and passing it on now. The details carry their weight. Saturated orange nails in the "Bold" frame - rarely anyone's first choice, typically mine. Under the crossed-out "Rules", my feet. In Vans. The role called for someone who breaks rules. The shoes were the obvious one to break.
Impact
Sixteen hours between the idea and the send. End to end, I turned a set of facts into something real. Reading a brief properly is most of the job. The rest is offering what words couldn't say, and refusing to settle for the easy way.
